DALLAS, TX – KD Studio’s Imagination Players ends its season with a final show that brings quality classic American Musical Theatre to Dallas with composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II’s Oklahoma! This rollicking musical is based on the 1931 play Green Grow the Lilacs by Lynn Riggs.
Written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Oklahoma! was the first collaboration between these two icons of American musical theatre.
Oklahoma! was originally produced in 1943, and was a box office smash hit that saw 2212 performances before closing, an unprecedented number at the time. Though some critics originally panned the musical as being too avant-gard, it is now considered the birth of the modern American musical. Oklahoma!’s story of the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for the love story of Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl.
This production marks the second time Imagination Players will perform the same musical with two totally different, though equally brilliant, casts. “It’s wonderful to see how the actors are passing on what they’ve learned from their many years in Imagination Players to the younger actors,” Choreographer Stephanie Butler stated. “Because Imagination Players has helped shape and support them, they’re eager to give back and share their experiences and joy with others.”
Lynn Ambrose, Music Director, says, “Oklahoma! just kind of chose itself. I really wanted to close the 2012 season with a classic musical in November and Oklahoma! is the quintessential musical theatre piece. It’s a love story with beautiful music and dancing–a great fall show!”
Andy Baldwin, the director of this summer’s Willy Wonka Jr., will serve as director for Oklahoma! “I’ve always wanted to direct a kid’s production of Oklahoma! and the Rodgers and Hammerstein library makes that possible with this special adaptation, G2K Oklahoma. The ‘G2K’ Getting To Know Series: Uniquely adapted musicals specifically for youth performers,” says Baldwin. “It’s such an iconic piece of theatre. I’m excited to have the opportunity to work on it, especially with this cast and creative team.”
In addition to Lynn Ambrose as Music Director, the creative team includes Choreographer Stephanie Butler, who has previously worked with KD Studio and Imagination Players as both a performer and choreographer. Costume Design is by Ryan Matthieu Smith.
